The cage blocks a lot of your view so you can't see some hits coming your way and it doesn't condition you to feel any contact and babies you. I have noticed that my gloves has so small tears and paint chipping off because of this head gear.

One of the new guys came in with this and let me check it out. The cage is completely not needed. It just gets in the way and doesn't really offer any added protection. The regular head gear coupled with the fact that you will be sparring against people with more padding on their gloves means that even taking a shot to the nose isn't a big deal.
